It Pays to Apply for Financial Aid
College can be affordable, but you must plan carefully, and apply, apply, apply! While these may be simple words of advice, taken seriously and executed properly, they can lead to hundreds or even thousands of dollars in scholarships and federal aid.
Such was the case with Lyniese Patterson, a 2005 Campbell High School graduate, who won over $400,000 in financial aid, including a $120,000 scholarship to attend Stanford University for four years.
"I'm surprised I got as much as I did," said Lyniese. "I set goals for myself, and if I hadn't set goals, I wouldn't have achieved what I did." She also credits the great guidance provided by her high school counselor, Mrs. Eleyne Fia.
According to Mrs. Fia, the most common mistake students make is actually, not filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must submit the FAFSA if you want to apply for federal and state financial aid. "So many students end up not receiving financial aid simply because they did not finish their application," she said.(Read more)
